Over 20 years ago, the late restaurateur Joe Baum and Tim Zagat first dreamt up Restaurant Week in New York City and it was a national and international success. Since then, Restaurant Week has taken place
across the globe in locations such as USA, China, Puerto Rico, Japan and Hong Kong.
The inaugural KL Restaurant Week will feature specially designed menus by over 45 restaurants, with lunches starting from RM20 nett and dinner from RM50 nett. The full list of participating restaurants and prices can be viewed here.
Jacqueline Wong, General Manager of KL Restaurant Week Shd Bhd shared, "We are excited to bring this popular concept to KL. Foodies get to sample a diverse selection of menus and restaurants get to showcase their popular dishes and increase their profiles. It is our mission for KLRW to raise the bar of the dining scene in Malaysia."
For bookings:
Each restaurant has set aside a limited number of seats offering Restaurant Week menus. Following the tradition of Restaurant Week, reservations can only be made online via http://www.klrestaurantweek.com/. A booking fee of RM2 per seat applies. We were invited to Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant at Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur to try out their lunch menu for KL Restaurant Week. The restaurant is led by two experienced chefs - Wang Yunghai from Si Chuan and Chinese Chef Donald Chan.
The special menus for KLRW are priced at RM58nett for 3-course lunch and RM98 nett for 3-course dinner. Lunch includes double boiled fish lips, king abalone with black chicken and lily bulb, wok-fried venison with black cocktail sauce and deep fried quail with prawn paste.
My favorite from the lunch menu is the nutritious and warming soup, which is made from premium seafood and double boiled superior stock. If you're wondering what fish lips taste like, it has a nice gelatinous texture. Chef Donald explains that premium venison parts are used for the second dish, and it is coated in a specially concocted black cocktail sauce, which is slightly sweet to the palate. For the third course, the quail is deep fried and then topped with a crisp prawn paste.
Pork-free.
