MySeafoodMart.com - Malaysia's First Online Seafood Store!

I love the convenience of online food shopping, whereby I can just sit in front of the computer, click a few buttons and get my groceries delivered to my doorstep. This is something I miss from my days in the UK.

The online food shopping trend is slowly catching up in Malaysia, and I am glad to have discovered MySeafoodMart.com recently. MySeafoodMart.com prides itself as a supplier of fresh seafood, so when I was asked if I would like to try their delivery service, of course I said YES!

Wonderful seafood dishes, made with delivery from MySeafoodMart

First, a little info on MySeafoodMart.com - it is the first & only full-fledged Online Seafood Store that sells fresh seafood online & provides delivery to most parts of Klang Valley. With over 20 years of experience in the fishing industry, they supply seafood to fish sellers & restaurants (such as Sitka, Porto Romano and The Kitchen Table) all over Klang Valley. Now, they have started an online store to cater to households in Klang Valley directly. Wonderful news for us all!

How to Order: Visit their website at www.myseafoodmart.com and under Categories, you can browse what fresh fish, fresh shellfish and frozen shellfish they have available. Select what you would like to purchase, add to cart and checkout. Then, simply enter your delivery address and pay via Paypal, bank transfer or cash on delivery. There is a minimum order of RM100 (RM15 delivery charge) and delivery is free for orders above RM200. At the moment, they deliver to most areas of Klang Valley, including Subang, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, PJ, Damansara, KL City, and Ampang.

Let's talk seafood! All seafood sold on their website are from their daily catch and all orders are delivered directly from Pulau Ketam to your doorstep. Deliveries are made every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

My QC manager approves :)

You can choose from a variety of fresh fish such as dragon tiger grouper (龙虎班), threadfin/senangin (ma yau上午), giant/estuary grouper (long dan 大龙且), a few types of pomfret, red snapper (红鱼) and seabass/siakap (食角). They also have fresh shellfish such as cuttlefish, flower crab, prawns and squid.

Red prawns "Hong Ha"

Our order arrived in a styrofoam box, filled with ice to maintain the freshness of the seafood. Inside, there was a 1.15kg dragon tiger grouper also known as loong fu pan (RM60/kg), 1kg of red big prawn XL size (Hong Ha 红大虾 - RM56/kg), as well as frozen slipper lobster meat (RM39 per 450g pack) and mantis prawn meat (RM22.90 per 1kg pack).

We originally had plans to make a Vietnamese dish that evening, but the seafood delivered to us was so fresh, we felt the urge to cook it that evening itself. The dragon tiger grouper comes from their own farm in Pulau Ketam and the guts/scales are removed before it arrives to the customer. We simply oven-baked the fish with some lemongrass, dill and fennel - the fish meat is so sweet, meaty and taut, we enjoyed it very much! See recipe here.

We also cooked half of the prawns, with some garlic butter and curry leaves. You can find the recipe here. It's certainly pleasurable to be able to enjoy such large, fresh prawns - so succulent and "bouncy" 弹性 - finger licking good! The other half of the prawns went onto the BBQ that we had a couple of days later. The price is very reasonable for the size and freshness of these prawns.

Prawns on the BBQ - delish!

The slipper lobsters are caught from the waters of Mersing, and the meat is removed from its shell and frozen to maintain freshness. I certainly enjoyed having it with my salad (see my post from yesterday for recipe), simply pan-roasted with some butter, shallots, garlic and thyme.

I have yet to try the premium frozen mantis prawns 虾姑 yet but am quite confident that it will meet my satisfaction as well.

Thanks to MySeafoodMart.com for providing us with the fresh seafood. I would highly recommend this website to any seafood fans.

A Day Out with Kids in Semenyih + Recipe for Organic Tomato-Basil Salsa

A couple of months ago, during the school holidays, we wanted to take our kids to the Rabbit Fun Land in Semenyih, but when we got there the place was closed for the day. Kids were really disappointed as they were looking forward to see and feed the rabbits.

On our way in, we noticed a signboard for Ladybird Organic Farm so we went there to have a look. And thank God we did, as they had a small section in the farm whereby they have animals such as rabbits, geese and chicken. Hurrah! :D This put a huge smile on our kids face once again.

Hello rabbits, pleased to meet you :)

Geese

Rooster

Other than visiting the animals, we also got to experience how organic vegetables are cultivated here. Definitely an eye-opener for the kids. First the seeds are sowed into these mini containers, then moved to the plots once they are bigger.

They also have various fruit trees such as papaya..

A lovely day out

Feeding time :)

All in all, a great experience for the kids to learn about how vegetables and fruits are grown. There is no entrance fee and they even encourage people to pluck their own vegetables. We bought some organic cherry tomatoes, kailan and nai pak before leaving.  They also have various herbs for sale such as misai kucing, Sabah snake grass, and angelica keiskei. They also deliver their products to Klang Valley, for more info please see their website here.

Note to parents: It can get quite hot here, so do bring a hat and plenty of water for your kids.

 **********

For lunch, we stopped by at a food court called Restoran 77, not far from the farm (at the main road, opposite the Kuil Sri Subramaniar). We randomly ordered some food to share - wantan mee (RM4.30), fishball noodle (RM4.50), Penang char koay teow (RM4), and a plate of char siew (RM5). Pretty decent food and the stall operators are really friendly.

For dinner, we had stir fried organic nai pak that we bought from the farm, and Hubby also made a fresh tomato-basil salsa, which we had with pita bread and minced pork (recipe here). Really tasty! Here's the recipe:

MILO Malaysia Breakfast Day 2014

I'm a believer that breakfast is the important meal for the day. Kids especially, should never skip breakfast as it provides fuel for their body and helps them perform more efficiently throughout the day. Breakfast will also help you maintain a healthy body weight and prevent obesity.

You can start your day right by eating right. For us, breakfast can be as simple as having two pieces of toast, a bowl of cereal, fresh fruits, or a full English breakfast when we have more time.

Start your day right with a balanced breakfast!

Malaysia Breakfast Day is an annual initiative by MILO® to reinforce the message that breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day. Through this initiative, MILO® wants to drive change and demonstrate the relevance of a balanced breakfast and active lifestyle in every Malaysian home. This is also in line with MILO®’s aim in ensuring our children develop good healthy habits for both nutrition and physical involvement.

The Nestle MILO® team serves a healthy breakfast accompanied with
a nutritious mug of MILO

This year, MILO® is introducing the benefits of Positive Energy from having a well-balanced and nutritious breakfast. Positive Energy is derived from the perfect ratio of nutrients consisting of protein, carbohydrates and fats to provide our body with the much needed fuel to take on both physical and mental challenges each day.

According to Ho Hau Chieh, Executive Director of Dairy Business Unit, Nestlé Products, “Fuelled by MILO®’s determination and motivation to advocate Malaysians on the importance of a well-balanced breakfast, the day is part of its nation-wide nutrition campaign - ‘Positive Energy For Champions’ that aims to keep the momentum going as the healthy breakfast habit should be adopted actively and not just in the heat of the moment,” he says.

"As an advocator of healthy living, we strive to reevaluate how the nation can adopt an improved view on healthy living and start practicing with little steps,” adds Ho.

The MILO® Positive Energy Squad makes an appearance at the MILO® Malaysia Breakfast Day launch

This year, the annual event will be held in Dataran Putrajaya on 20th April 2014 starting from 7:00am. The event calls upon all Malaysians to come together as a family to enjoy the most important meal of the day and participate in physical activities together.

Apart from the 8 km and 3 km runs, there will be breakfast meals available to all runners and attendees as well as various interactive sport activities that will keep the whole family energized.

"Back to Basics" with a Twist @ Genji Japanese Restaurant, Hilton Petaling Jaya

Japanese cuisines ranks high on my favorite cuisine list, hence when an invitation came in from Hilton Petaling Jaya to sample their new menu at Genji Japanese Restaurant, I accepted the invite without hesitation.

Led by Chef Richard Teoh, Head Chef of Genji, the restaurant now boasts a brand new fusion Japanese menu inspired by two of the biggest cities in Japan - Tokyo and Osaka. Osaka is well-known for its simple, mild flavours whereas Tokyo in contrast features bold, strong flavours in food. With its "back to basic" philosophy, the new menu focuses on delivering authentic dishes with a mix of traditional with bold and robust flavours.

Fresh seafood is air-flown twice a week to the restaurant (Tue and Fri). The omakase kaiseki, which leaves your dining experience up to the chef, whereby he will prepare it in accordance to the fresh seafood selection of the day. A 7-course omakase kaiseki will set you back RM300++, whereas the 5-course sendai kaizeki  is priced at RM220++.

During our review, we sampled several items from the new menu.  We started off with a trio of appetizers, usually served with the omakase, which included maki tamago (egg roll with unagi filling), chuka kurage (marinated jellyfish) and ika tobiko ai (marinated squid with flying fish roe). Lovely selection served in dainty little seashell bowls.

The kimchi salad (RM26) did a fantastic job in whetting our appetites. The garden greens were tossed with the tangy kimchi and a spicy dressing.

The sashimi/sushi combo platter (RM240) arrived next. Stunningly presented, the fresh sashimi slices sat in a ice bowl and included salmon, tuna, toro (tuna belly), and avocado wrapped in kampachi. The sushi selection included ikura, sea bream, tuna as well as soft shell crab roll. A pure delight to devour.

Fresh sashimi

Oh sushi!

Kaizen mushi (RM30) is traditionally served in Osaka during winter time. The clear fish broth is mild and flavorful, and assortment of seafood (prawns, scallops, mussel, salmon) are steamed with vegetables and mushrooms. This is served with a ponzu dipping sauce with grated radish, yuzu zest and a dash of Tabasco.

The next dish is an example of what you would be served if ordering the omakase kaizeki. On the left is the kaki chilli mayo which Hubby declared as his favorite dish of the afternoon. A single US oyster is grilled with mayo and a hint of chilli padi - so succulent and flavorful with a touch of spiciness. I also loved the gindara teriyaki (cod fish) which is served on a bed of grated radish, Nameko mushroom and spinach puree. The fish was so flaky and delicious.

Oyster and cod fish - brilliant!

To end, we had the azuki banana dorayaki (RM30) - fragrant bananas and red bean paste wrapped in dorayaki (Japanese pancake, made in-house) with goma (black sesame) ice cream. Love the sweet, creamy ice cream.

Thanks Hilton PJ for the fantastic lunch.
