Plan B, Midvalley Megamall, KL

How's your Christmas shopping going so far? Am super efficient this year, and I'm almost done with the Christmas shopping for the kids except for a few bits and bobs.

After Christmas shopping last weekend, we stopped by Plan B at Midvalley to try out their new menu. As usual, restaurant was busy so there was a 30-minute wait for the food. We ordered the Warm steak salad (RM26) and Shrimp Po'Boy (RM23).

The salad looked great and came in a generous portion - tender grilled sliced sirloin steak nestled between fresh arugula leaves and cherry tomatoes, and topped with Parmesan cheese. Tasted good too. Only realised later that the pine nuts were missing from the salad.

Instead of his usual cheeseburger order, Hubby tried the Shrimp Po'Boy, a classic sandwich originating from Louisiana.  Crispy fried shrimps drizzled with Japanese mayo, was served in a soft brioche hot dog bun. Served with a side salad and French fries. Not bad, but the cheeseburger here is pretty hard to beat.

For dessert, we had the sea salt truffle milk chocolate tart (RM12) and lemon meringue tart (RM12), and Hubby also had the affogato (RM10).

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the chocolate tart actually had truffle oil in it, so this reminded us a little to eating the Le Palladio at LDG but in chocolate form. The chocolate filling was really rich, so this is best for sharing. The only thing I didnt like about this was the tart crust, which was overbaked and too hard.

The lemon meringue tart was good - light and tangy dessert, enjoyed this a lot.

Dim Sum @ Tim Ho Wan Malaysia 添好運, The Boulevard, Midvalley, KL

Tim Ho Wan 添好運, Hong Kong's most famous Michelin-star dim sum restaurant has finally arrived on Malaysian shores, and will opening its doors to the public tomorrow (28th November) at 11am. Their first outlet is located at The Boulevard, MidValley (right opposite the water fountain in front of The Gardens Mall). I was delighted to be invited to experience Tim Ho Wan's dim sum in Malaysia at their pre-launch lunch event today.

Tim Ho Wan's 添好運 name means "add good luck" in Cantonese and its first hole-in-the-wall outlet in Mongkok, founded and run by Chef Mak Kwai Pui (麥桂培) earned a Michelin-star in its first year of operation. In their overseas outlets, people would queue up for hours just to get a taste of the delicious dim sum. Seating at the Malaysian outlet is also on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The menu at Tim Ho Wan Malaysia features their signature items, the "Big 4 Heavenly Kings", vermicelli rolls, steamed items, deep fried items, rice, congee, vegetable and desserts. Despite the restaurant being full with invited guests, service was polite and efficient.

Not to be missed is the famed Baked Bun with BBQ Pork 酥皮焗叉烧包 (RM10.80). I have drooled over these whenever my friends have posted them on Instagram/Facebook and am glad that I have finally gotten the chance to taste them. The baked bun has a crisp yet fluffy exterior and slightly sweet tasting with a savoury, meaty filling. Really good, I have to say!

Crisp, fluffy, sweet and salty.. all in one!

Beautiful crisp golden exterior... ;)

Their other signature items include the pan fried carrot cake 萝卜糕(RM9.80), steamed egg cake a.k.a Malay cake (RM7.80) and vermicelli roll with pig's liver (RM10.80). We super love the steamed egg cake 马来糕, which apparently takes 3 days of preparation for it to become soft and fluffy. Indeed we love the soft texture with a nice caramel flavour. Baby D, who is on his first food review with mummy today had almost the whole one to himself. A must-try!

The vermicelli roll with pig's liver was a bit too gamey for my liking, I'd stick to the regular ones with BBQ pork or shrimp next time.

All mine :D

We also enjoyed the Braised Chicken Feet with Abalone Sauce (RM9.80) - the chicken feet here have a more bouncy texture and is wonderful paired with the sauce. Comes in 4 generous pieces.

This was my mum's favorite, steamed spinach dumpling with shrimp (RM7.80) with smooth, translucent skin. Tim Ho Wan prides itself in using only fresh and quality ingredients, and their dim sum is made to order to retain dim sum's flavour and texture.

Love the spinach and shrimp filling!

Another must-order for us when eating dim sum, siew mai aka pork dumpling with shrimp (RM10.80). Simple but well executed.

Pork rib with black bean sauce (RM8.80)

The wasabi salad prawn dumpling (RM10.80) - crisp and juicy, topped with ebikko and wasabi mayo sauce for a spicy kick.

The next 3 items I did not try, took the photos from our neighbour's table ;)

Prawn dumpling (RM11.80)

Vermicelli roll with BBQ pork (RM12.80)

Beef ball with beancurd skin (RM7.80)

There are 2 desserts to choose from, the mango sago pomelo (RM8.80) and tonic medlar & osmanthus cake 杞子桂花糕 (RM6.80). The mango sago pomelo was really good and refreshing, and not too sweet either. At first we ordered one bowl to share, but it was so yummy, we had to order another ;)

Jelly on a plate, wibble wobble... ;)

Tim Ho Wan's Malaysia menu

My Top 5 Must-try items from Tim Ho Wan are: baked bun with BBQ pork, steamed egg cake, steamed spinach dumpling with shrimp, wasabi salad prawn dumpling and braised chicken feet with abalone sauce.

Opening times: 11am to 10pm (last orders 9.30pm).

Serves Pork.

Price: Prices start from RM7.80 for dim sum items.

Tiffin's by Chef Korn, Midvalley Megamall, KL

Last week, we visited Chef Korn's (of Erawan fame) new place in Midvalley, called Tiffin's by Chef Korn which serves Thai village-style food.

The restaurant is located on the top most floor near Daiso upper level. Quite a big lunch crowd while we were there. Service is polite and friendly here.

For lunch, you can order one of the sets which is available until 3pm - prices start from RM18.80. Choose from beef ball noodles, tom yum seafood noodles, Pad Thai, Thai-style beef steak, pineapple fried rice, green curry rice and more.

A little snack before our main meal is served - crispy pork skin (RM3). Addictive and crunchy!

All set menus are served with Chef Korn's daily appetizer and fresh Thai-based salad. Appetizer that we got was a fried chicken drumlet with Thai chilli sauce (pretty tasty) and an apple salad with Thai-ish dressing.

We ordered Chinese tea.... Twinings tea served in this cute old-school kettle and enamel mugs... LIKE!

I was expecting to see our lunch served in tiffin sets (cos of the restaurant's name). My pork noodles (RM18.80) were served in a enormous white bowl, a big generous portion indeed! Said to be a recipe of Chef Korn's grandma, you can choose to add rice noodles, egg noodles or even no carbs. I ordered this mainly because it's non spicy and it's something I can share with Baby D - the clear broth is indeed flavorful. I also like how the condiments are served in test tubes.... salt, fish sauce, vinegar, chilli flakes - for you to adjust the taste to your own preference.

Condiments in test tubes

Hubby ordered one of the rice sets - stewed pork belly (RM18.80). The sauce is slightly sweet but very tasty. Pork belly has been stewed to perfection - slightly wobbly and tender. Our only gripe is that the set comes with only 1 piece of pork belly (and it's not that big).

For desserts, we went for a selection of two kuihs from the front display (RM3). Very nice ondeh ondeh and kuih lapis.

Service: Good.

Price: Total bill RM55.

Location: Tiffin's by Chef Korn, T068 & T069, Third Floor, Midvalley Megamall, Mid Valley City, Lingkaran Syed Putra, 59200 Kuala Lumpur.

Manmaru Homemade Udon, Midvalley Megamall, KL

If given the choice, my kids would always opt for Japanese food for lunch. We decided to try Manmaru Homemade Udon, a fairly new udon place in Midvalley.

The restaurant operates a self-service system, hence you place your order at the counter, pay and collect your food before going to your table. The interior is basic and bright, with an open concept kitchen.  The udon is freshly made on site at their outlet, using machinery imported from Japan and the culinary skills of their Japanese chefs.

There are a variety of udon available here, from curry udon (RM10.90), kimchi udon (RM11.90), niku udon (RM12.90) to zaru udon (RM8.90). You can view the full menu here. On weekdays, there are also set lunches available, which come with a side salad, hanjuku egg, rolled chicken with teriyaki sauce and green tea. Pretty good value for money.

We ordered two sets, the bukake udon set (RM13.90) and kake udon set (RM12.90). Since the restaurant was not too busy as we were dining early, our food was brought to us when ready. Green tea is refillable at the drinks counter.

Bukake udon set

I had the bukake udon, which is cold udon served in a fish broth and generous amounts of grated radish and ginger. I enjoyed it, very refreshing and the texture of the udon is nice, smooth and chewy. The udon portion is quite big, so it was pretty filling. The fresh garden salad is dressed in an appetizing apple sauce. The hanjuku egg was very nicely done - was pleasantly surprised by the lovely runny yolk, though it could be marinated slightly longer in soy sauce for a more intense taste. We both felt that the rolled chicken was really nice - smooth and tender, and nicely flavored by the teriyaki sauce.

Baby D has already "attacked" the egg before I could take photos :P

We also had the the classic Kake Udon, served in a mildly flavoured broth called kakejiru, made of dashi, soy sauce (shoyu) and mirin, and topped with some finely sliced scallions, and a couple of thin slices of kamaboko (fish cake). Simple and nice.

One thing that impressed me here is the service (despite it being a self-service restaurant). I was refilling two cups of green tea and I was having trouble carrying it back to our table cos the cup was too hot. I was pleasantly surprised when one of the staff noticed and came over to help me carry the cup back to my table. A simple gesture, but it left a lasting impression. We need more people like this.

Full menu can be viewed here.

Price: Total bill RM26.80.

Location: Manmaru Homemade Udon, S-045A, Midvalley City, Lingkaran Syed Putra, 59200 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
