Plan B, Midvalley Megamall, KL

How's your Christmas shopping going so far? Am super efficient this year, and I'm almost done with the Christmas shopping for the kids except for a few bits and bobs.

After Christmas shopping last weekend, we stopped by Plan B at Midvalley to try out their new menu. As usual, restaurant was busy so there was a 30-minute wait for the food. We ordered the Warm steak salad (RM26) and Shrimp Po'Boy (RM23).

The salad looked great and came in a generous portion - tender grilled sliced sirloin steak nestled between fresh arugula leaves and cherry tomatoes, and topped with Parmesan cheese. Tasted good too. Only realised later that the pine nuts were missing from the salad.

Instead of his usual cheeseburger order, Hubby tried the Shrimp Po'Boy, a classic sandwich originating from Louisiana.  Crispy fried shrimps drizzled with Japanese mayo, was served in a soft brioche hot dog bun. Served with a side salad and French fries. Not bad, but the cheeseburger here is pretty hard to beat.

For dessert, we had the sea salt truffle milk chocolate tart (RM12) and lemon meringue tart (RM12), and Hubby also had the affogato (RM10).

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the chocolate tart actually had truffle oil in it, so this reminded us a little to eating the Le Palladio at LDG but in chocolate form. The chocolate filling was really rich, so this is best for sharing. The only thing I didnt like about this was the tart crust, which was overbaked and too hard.

The lemon meringue tart was good - light and tangy dessert, enjoyed this a lot.

Pool Bar & Lounge @ Gaya Island Resort, Malaysia

On our last day at Gaya Island Resort, we visited the Pool Bar & Lounge for a quick lunch before departing the resort. As the name suggests, it overlooks the resort's infinity pool and floating cabanas.

I like the view a lot!

The menu is mainly made up of light bites such as sandwiches, burgers, pizza, Japanese sushi/maki, as well as tapas.

We ordered the bento box, which included grilled teriyaki fish, sashimi, tempura and sushi. Everything tasted fresh. We also ordered the California maki with avocado, crabmeat, cucumber, tobiko and mayonnaise. In hindsight we would have skipped this if we knew the bento was such a big portion - carbs overload!

We also ordered the Gourmet Burger - a thick Angus beef patty sandwiched between sesame seed buns, lettuce, onion, tomato, cheddar, beef bacon and caramelised onions. Juicy and totally satisfying!

Nice place for an al fresco lunch or simply chilling with a drink

Simply d, Avenue K, Kuala Lumpur

Over the weekend, we visited Simply d's 3rd and latest outlet in Avenue K shopping mall. Simply d is part of The Delicious Group; a fast-casual cafe/restaurant offering an array of Western and Asian infused pasta, salads, sandwiches and more. They have 2 other outlets in Nu Sentral and The Curve.

The great thing about the menu here is that you can mix-and-match the style and type of noodles you want. For example, you can order the carbonara with linguine, fusilli or even yellow mee (if that's what you like!).

Other styles of noodle/pasta styles available here are: dry tossed sambal, salted egg pumpkin, beef short ribs herbal soup, laksa, Vietnamese salmon pho, teriyaki salmon, creamy seafood marinara, chilli chicken "pastamee", sweet basil & cashewnut pesto, and roasted garlic & sundried tomato aglio olio. These styles can be matched with these types of noodles: linguine, angel hair, fusilli, spaghettini, soba noodles, flat white noodles and yellow mee.

Simply d's menu

The kids chose to have the sweet basil and cashew nut pesto with spaghettini along with the option of adding grilled lamb kofta (RM15). Service is fast here. Great choice by the kids, they really enjoyed the pesto pasta here - Baby D took a couple of mouthfuls and exclaimed "Deeeeeee-licious!".

The boy who loves pesto

We also tried the fusilli salted egg pumpkin plus a tea egg for RM13.50. Really like the creamy pumpkin, but would love more salted egg yolk in mine. The tea egg is beautifully runny, could eat two of these!

We also ordered a 100% beef burger (RM13) with coleslaw and tapioca chips. Nice juicy burger and so reasonably priced too. My Hubby would definitely enjoy this.

For desserts, there is a selection of cakes and ice creams. I highly recommend the coconut and pandan cake (RM8) - it's fluffy, soft and luscious. One of the best cakes we've eaten this year. My kids loved it a lot, they finished the slice between them (I only managed a sneaky mouthful). Definitely returning for this. Kids also tried a slice of chocolate and hazelnut brownie (RM9) which was rich and sinful. No problems finishing that too!

Follow them on Instagram @simplydcafe for more details - but basically you just need to ask for a cup, snap some photos and you'll be in the running to win one of their cool stools. Oh and every participant gets a free coffee.

Le Moon's Eatery.Bakery.Zakka @ Jade Hills, Kajang, Selangor

Kajang is not someplace we often visit, however we heard that Chef Steven Kruger (of the now defunct Romanza) is the head chef at Le Moon's in Jade Hills, Kajang, we headed over one day for lunch. The restaurant is located in the row of shophouses just before the Jade Hills residence entrance. It's hard to miss with its vibrant turquoise shopfront.

Le Moon's

As we walked in the restaurant, we were greeted by their friendly and enthusiastic servers. Though the restaurant is made up of 3 storeys, on normal days only the ground floor is open for business. At the moment, it is opened from 8am to 6pm but we were told that they will soon open for dinner (end of March tentatively) with a fine dining concept.

The interior is simple yet cosy, and the ambiance is really nice for spending a quiet, relaxed afternoon here.

Some comfortable seating at the front of the restaurant, where you can sit back and enjoy a book. They also have bakery items for sale by the counter.

They are operating on a temporary menu right now and the new a la carte menu will be launched after their Grand Launch sometime this month. We ordered 2 appetizers and a burger to share. First to arrive was the wild mushroom risotto (RM18), which looked pretty similar to the one we had at Romanza before. This was delicious - nicely cooked risotto with slow roasted cherry tomatoes, goat’s cheese croquettes, pan fried shimeji mushrooms and a crisp mushroom-truffle oil tortellini.

The New Zealand mussels (RM23) are steamed and served in a creamy garlic and thyme sauce. A side of crusty homemade bread is served to mop up the rich sauce. This was surprisingly very filling.

The beef burger (RM29) was also excellent - 100% homemade beef patty, served with turkey bacon, caramelised onions, Parmesan shavings and wild mushroom sauce. It was nice and juicy, and we also enjoyed the crispy onion rings.

Since we had time to kill (and some more room for desserts), we ordered the only dessert available on their menu, almond parfait (RM15) and a slice of red velvet cake (RM8). The cake was a little dry, and could be improved.  I don't mean to rave, but the almond parfait was so good. For us, this was one of the best desserts we've eaten in KL this year. The almond parfait was creamy and dreamy, and served with a refreshing apple sorbet, warm doughnut, chocolate honeycomb and a sweet apple crisp.

Almond parfait - pretty and delicious!

Fresco, Jaya Grocer + Bonjour Garden @ Intermark Mall, KL

During the weekend, Hubby and I like going to The Intermark for a spot of grocery shopping as well as food. Recently, we tried Fresco, Jaya Grocer's 'grocerant' (grocer + restaurant) which serves Italian-style cuisine. The idea is for customers to choose from a selection of meat and seafood from the supermarket area (with a sticker "Cooks for you"), pay for it and then bring it to Fresco and they will cook it for you. There is no additional fee for cooking it, though you have to order a side dish for every item you want cooked for you.

No-frills affordable steak

Fresco at Jaya Grocer Intermark

On our first visit here, I visited the meat department and got myself a Australian rib eye steak (RM7.99 per 100g) and I paid approx RM19 for 240g of steak. I consider that a pretty reasonable price to pay, especially since they cooked the steak to my liking, a lovely medium rare. The steaks have got that nice char which we like too. For side dish, we have tried the garlic mash  potatoes (RM6.80)and steak fries (RM6.80). I'd say skip the mash and go for the fries, a really nice and huge portion, which is lightly seasoned with some cajun spice. On another visit, Hubby had the Angus striploin which slightly more expensive at RM14.90 per 100g, but it was really tasty and tender.

We have also tried the Wagyu supreme burger (RM38) which comes with a thick beef patty, melted cheese and sliced Portobello mushrooms. A little sloppy to eat, but this was quite delicious with a nice combination of flavours.

Nicely cooked + nice char

Jaya Grocer also stocks the world-renowned Bordier butter (in limited numbers).... trust me, it's oh-so-good! Named by many chefs (including Guy Savoy) as the best butter from France.

We also like stopping by at Bonjour Garden (adjacent to Jaya Grocer) for some desserts. We have tried their Cinnamon Raisin Twist bun (RM3), Choco Raspberry (RM6.60), Chocolate Galaxy (RM6.60) and Strawberry Shortcake (RM7). I especially like the Chocolate Galaxy - rich, smooth chocolate, as well as the soft, fluffy Strawberry Shortcake.

Parking: Free on Sundays, or spend RM30 and above at Jaya Grocer and get 3 hrs free parking.
