Marutama Ramen @ Avenue K, KL

Marutama Ramen is one of my fav places to get my ramen fix. Usually we go to the Fahrenheit 88 outlet, but happy that we can now get it at Avenue K too.

The outlet is located on upper concourse level (same level as H&M Kids). The outlet is quite small, but service is fast and friendly.

Marutama is good if you like your ramen soup to be less rich. Not too cloying, hence you can easily finish the whole bowl. You get the choice of spicy or non spicy soup here, but I personally prefer the non-spicy one. Plus it's better for sharing with the kids.

The char siu is also pretty good and best of all, the EGGS! Simply perfect everytime. Most of the time, we need to order 2 eggs each.

I usually go for the ajitsuke tamago ramen (RM21) with 1 slice of char siu and 1 egg, and Hubby goes for the char siu tamago ramen (RM27) which comes with 4 slices of char siu. And a few extra eggs please. (ajitsuke tamago RM2 each)

We like to grab some ice creams from Simply d before we head home. So far, we've tried a few flavours and our favorites are passion fruit, mango as well as strawberry cheesecake. Perfect for a hot afternoon!

Opening times: 10am to 10pm daily.

Service: Good.

Price: Total bill rm66

Location: Marutama Ramen, UC-7, Upper Concourse Level, Avenue K, 156 Jalan Ampang, 50450, Kuala Lumpur. (same level as H&M Kids Department)

Simply d, Avenue K, Kuala Lumpur

Over the weekend, we visited Simply d's 3rd and latest outlet in Avenue K shopping mall. Simply d is part of The Delicious Group; a fast-casual cafe/restaurant offering an array of Western and Asian infused pasta, salads, sandwiches and more. They have 2 other outlets in Nu Sentral and The Curve.

The great thing about the menu here is that you can mix-and-match the style and type of noodles you want. For example, you can order the carbonara with linguine, fusilli or even yellow mee (if that's what you like!).

Other styles of noodle/pasta styles available here are: dry tossed sambal, salted egg pumpkin, beef short ribs herbal soup, laksa, Vietnamese salmon pho, teriyaki salmon, creamy seafood marinara, chilli chicken "pastamee", sweet basil & cashewnut pesto, and roasted garlic & sundried tomato aglio olio. These styles can be matched with these types of noodles: linguine, angel hair, fusilli, spaghettini, soba noodles, flat white noodles and yellow mee.

Simply d's menu

The kids chose to have the sweet basil and cashew nut pesto with spaghettini along with the option of adding grilled lamb kofta (RM15). Service is fast here. Great choice by the kids, they really enjoyed the pesto pasta here - Baby D took a couple of mouthfuls and exclaimed "Deeeeeee-licious!".

The boy who loves pesto

We also tried the fusilli salted egg pumpkin plus a tea egg for RM13.50. Really like the creamy pumpkin, but would love more salted egg yolk in mine. The tea egg is beautifully runny, could eat two of these!

We also ordered a 100% beef burger (RM13) with coleslaw and tapioca chips. Nice juicy burger and so reasonably priced too. My Hubby would definitely enjoy this.

For desserts, there is a selection of cakes and ice creams. I highly recommend the coconut and pandan cake (RM8) - it's fluffy, soft and luscious. One of the best cakes we've eaten this year. My kids loved it a lot, they finished the slice between them (I only managed a sneaky mouthful). Definitely returning for this. Kids also tried a slice of chocolate and hazelnut brownie (RM9) which was rich and sinful. No problems finishing that too!

By the way, Simply d is also currently running a Instagram contest called #snapmycup. Follow them on Instagram @simplydcafe for more details - but basically you just need to ask for a cup, snap some photos and you'll be in the running to win one of their cool stools. Oh and every participant gets a free coffee.

Bankara Ramen & Tokyo Pastry @ Avenue K, KL

Avenue K is fast becoming one of our favorite spots in KL for shopping and food. Hubby wanted to try the Samba Brazilian Steakhouse, but Baby C wanted to have ramen, so guess what we ended up having. :)

We decided to try out Bankara Ramen, located on Level 2 next to Taste Enclave. Tokyo-based Bankara Ramen has over 60 outlets across Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. This is their first outlet in Malaysia, and imports selected ingredients from Japan. They offer four types of authentic Japanese ramen styles namely Bankara Signature, Tonkotsu, Miso and Tsukemen.

Hubby chose the Kakuni Bankara (RM30) - their signature ramen served in a special pork broth infused with refined shoyu. The broth is lightly salted with a hint of sweetness, and the medium thickness Tokyo-style ramen noodles had a nice texture to it. This bowl of noodles comes with only 1 slice of cha shu and 1 slice of kakuni (braised pork belly). The cha shu is pretty ordinary but the kakuni was really tender, melt-in-the mouth and flavorsome.

Some condiments at the table - pickled ginger and fresh garlic

I went for the tonkotsu ramen (RM22), which employs a slow boil technique to create a milky pork bone soup. The noodles served is slightly different - the thin Hakata-style noodles which I prefer. I was very impressed with the rich and creamy soup, extremely palatable without being too salty or cloying. Drank it to the last drop. Again, this only came with a single piece of cha shu making this a pretty expensive bowl of ramen compared to their ramen competitors.

We also ordered 3 servings of ni-tamago (RM2.50 each), boiled egg marinated in soy sauce and it was really good. Deliciously runny yolk. I would eat the whole plate, if I could!

A classic samurai-inspired dining house

Service: Excellent.

Price: Total bill RM76.

Location: Bankara Ramen, Lot 2-7, Level 2, Avenue K Shopping Mall, 156, Jalan Ampang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur. (next to Taste Enclave)

********************

After some more shopping, we stopped by at Tokyo Pastry for some cakes and tea/coffee, as per Baby C's request. We ordered a cafe latte (RM8), rose french vanilla tea (RM6 - they use Dilmah here), choko mousse tart (RM9.90), and  oreo mille crepe (RM10.90). Service was quick, so we were served in no time at all. The ambiance is pretty nice and relaxed here, and we also enjoyed the cakes that we ordered. Since they had a special promotion on whereby you can get the next slice of mille crepe at 50% off, we went for another one, the hazelnut mille crepe (RM10.90).

We may return again soon for their afternoon tea set which sounds like good value at RM39 for 2 pax. (available 2-5pm)

Taste Enclave, Boost Juice & Krispy Kreme @ Avenue K, KL

Prior to this, we've never stepped foot inside Avenue K. I was lured here one weekend by Hubby with the promise of good food as well as H&M ;)

Taste Enclave is a place where you can find handpicked heritage street food stalls from all over Asia. You will be able to find Heun Kee claypot chicken rice from Pudu Market, Tong's Roast, Jalan Kayu Prata, and Mandarin Chicken Rice from Singapore. We love places like these that allow us to enjoy delicious hawker fare in a clean, comfortable setting (other similar places that we love are Lot 10 Hutong and EAT Food Village).

We decided to order the Hokkien Mee from Sentul Ah Yap Hokkien Mee stall. The Hokkien Mee is said to be prepared using a traditional recipe dating back to more than 100 years and the noodles are fried over charcoal fire. The noodles have great wok hei to it, and is coated in the delicious rich caramel sauce with prawns, sliced fish cake and pork liver. Overall we liked this a lot, though we would ask that they leave the pork liver out the next time as I'm not a big fan of that.

Cooked over a charcoal fire, like the good ol' days

This outlet is one of the busiest in Taste Enclave. After placing your order, you will be given one of those vibrating buzzers to tell you when your food is ready.

Baby C's pick is Stall No 21 Beef Noodle, which is from the famous Soong Kee Beef Noodle stall in KL which has been operating since 1945. We opted for the beef balls noodle soup (RM9) with kuay teow, topped with fragrant minced meat sauce, springy and delicious meatballs, and flavorful clear soup. Baby C gave this a big thumbs up :)

After lunch, we decided to visit the bookstore and en route, Hubby spotted this at Boost Juice. The "What's Ya Name Game" name of the day was Yen.... that means I get a free drink just by showing a photo ID...  lucky us!

We picked the Skinny Dip from the low fat "Super Smoothie" range (normally RM12.95), with all my favorite fruits - blueberries, raspberries, banana, apple juice, TD4 strawberry yogurt and ice, and a protein booster. Yum in a cup!

And just before we went home, we picked up some Krispy Kreme doughnuts for everyone at home :)

Can you tell that we love the chocolate coated custard-filled ones? ;)

Now, we can't wait to return to Avenue K again and again!
