Kampachi Japanese + Gelatomio Lounge, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

When I was growing up, we would sometimes make trips to KL to eat Japanese food at the reputable Kampachi Japanese restaurant located in Hotel Equatorial. Their Sunday buffet was legendary and it was something we looked forward to as the food was always delicious.

Chirashi don

The Kampachi in Equatorial KL is no more (hotel under redevelopment), but one can still find Kampachi in Equatorial Penang & Malacca, Troika, Johor Premium Outlets, Plaza 33 and Pavilion KL. The latter has been around for many years, but last month we visited it for the first time when we had our Japanese cravings. The restaurant in Pavilion KL is spacious and service is good although the restaurant was very busy during lunch time.

Sushi counter

I ordered the Soba/Udon & Chirashi Don set (RM54) and Hubby had the Una Don & Shake Sashimi set (RM62). Out of the two sets, I felt that mine was better value in money.

I opted for cold soba which came with 2 deep fried tempura prawn, as well as a delicious chirashi don. The raw fish topping (salmon, hamachi, tuna, squid, ebikko) was fresh. The tempura was also nice as batter was crisp. Enjoyed this set.

At one time, you could watch the chef preparing the handmade soba noodles at the shop front.

Hubby's set comes with grilled eel served over rice (Hubby commented the eel was really tasty but the portion was a little small), as well as 3 slices of fresh salmon sashimi. His set also comes with miso soup.

Nice, fresh salmon sashimi, but wish there was more!

After some shopping, we stopped at Gelatomio Lounge for some ice cream. There are around 50 flavours of gelato to choose from here and does not contain any animal fat, coloring or preservatives.

We went for a large cup to share (RM16 for 4 scoops), and went for 3 flavours - cookies and cream, caramel with chocolate and mint chocolate. The latter two flavours were pretty good, though I would have liked it better if the texture was creamier.

Opening times: Mon-Thurs 11.30am - 9.30pm, Fri 11.30am - 10.00pm, Sat 11.00am - 10.00pm, Sun 11.00am - 9.30pm.

Marutama Ramen @ Avenue K, KL

Marutama Ramen is one of my fav places to get my ramen fix. Usually we go to the Fahrenheit 88 outlet, but happy that we can now get it at Avenue K too.

The outlet is located on upper concourse level (same level as H&M Kids). The outlet is quite small, but service is fast and friendly.

Marutama is good if you like your ramen soup to be less rich. Not too cloying, hence you can easily finish the whole bowl. You get the choice of spicy or non spicy soup here, but I personally prefer the non-spicy one. Plus it's better for sharing with the kids.

The char siu is also pretty good and best of all, the EGGS! Simply perfect everytime. Most of the time, we need to order 2 eggs each.

I usually go for the ajitsuke tamago ramen (RM21) with 1 slice of char siu and 1 egg, and Hubby goes for the char siu tamago ramen (RM27) which comes with 4 slices of char siu. And a few extra eggs please. (ajitsuke tamago RM2 each)

We like to grab some ice creams from Simply d before we head home. So far, we've tried a few flavours and our favorites are passion fruit, mango as well as strawberry cheesecake. Perfect for a hot afternoon!

Opening times: 10am to 10pm daily.

Service: Good.

Price: Total bill rm66

Location: Marutama Ramen, UC-7, Upper Concourse Level, Avenue K, 156 Jalan Ampang, 50450, Kuala Lumpur. (same level as H&M Kids Department)

Aunty Betty's + Stonehaven Beach, Scotland

One of our favorite places to visit outside Aberdeen is Stonehaven. Such a quaint little town with a picturesque beach and harbour, the beautiful Dunnottar Castle, and also some great restaurants for dining.

Love coming down to Stonehaven beach

One of our friends told us to visit Aunty Betty's if we're going down to Stonehaven Beach. She even went as far as saying that it is the best ice cream she's ever had. We were told that on weekends, there are long queues at the shop.

Aunt Betty's sells sweets, candies, chocolates, cupcakes, bread, cookies as well as ice cream (that they're famous for). Their ice cream is supplied by Simpsons of Buckie. They have around 18-20 flavours available here. The base ice cream is made with all dairy products and no hydrogenated fats or other oils, hence the ice cream has a real old fashioned creamy taste and a great mouth feel.

Inside the shop..... candyland

We went for the salted caramel, mint chocolate crisp as well as Buckie bounty (coconut) flavour. We really really really loved the first two flavours - so yums! Creamy and delicious! (£3.50 for 2 scoops)

After ice cream, we went back down to the beach for a bit of fun x

Recipe: Jamie Oliver's Bloomin' Brilliant Chocolate Brownies

Baby C had a few days off school last week, so we decided to bake something nice to share with our family. After some discussion, we agreed upon chocolate brownies. We are using our tried and tested Jamie Oliver's Bloomin' Brilliant chocolate brownies recipe which yields great results :)

Chocolate Brownies with Vanilla Ice Cream

This is a really easy recipe, hence I measured out the ingredients and let Baby C do ALL the work. She did a really great job - a very competent little helper :)

This is a really sumptous, fudgey, and rich chocolate brownie. I love eating it warm with some vanilla ice cream. Thanks Baby C for making this! Absolutely brilliant.

Jamie Oliver's Bloomin' Brilliant Chocolate Brownies
Recipe adapted from here
Preparation time: 15-20 minutes
Cooking time: 25-30 minutes
Serves 6-8

Ingredients
250g unsalted butter
200g good-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), broken up
80g walnuts, roughly chopped
80g cocoa powder, sifted
65g plain flour, sifted
1 tsp baking powder
360 g caster sugar
4 large free-range eggs

To serve
Good quality vanilla ice cream
Korean strawberries

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. Line a 25cm square baking tin with greaseproof paper. In a large bowl over some simmering water, melt the butter and the chocolate and mix until smooth. Add the chopped nuts, and stir together.

2. In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and sugar, then add this to the chocolate and nut mixture. Stir together well. Beat the eggs and mix in until you have a silky consistency.

3. Pour your brownie mix into the baking tray, and place in the preheated oven for around 25 minutes. You don't want to overcook them so, unlike cakes, you don't want a skewer to come out all clean. The brownies should be slightly springy on the outside but still gooey in the middle.

4. Allow to cool in the tray, then carefully transfer to a large chopping board and cut into chunky squares. Serve with vanilla ice cream and strawberries.

Note: You can place the brownies in the microwave for about 10 seconds to warm it up before serving.

I am submitting this to the "Cook Like a Star 2nd anniversay" event which is hosted by Zoe of Bake for Happy Kids, Joyce of Kitchen Flavours and Mich of Piece of Cake.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul @ Paradigm Mall, Selangor

These days, we do not have to travel all the way to Penang to enjoy the famous hawker fare, with the emergence of sister outlets here in KL/PJ. Recently, a friend of ours recommended that we try out Penang Rd Famous Teochew Chendul which have opened up an outlet in Paradigm Mall - she's a Penangite and tells us that the food here is pretty authentic.

We have walked past this outlet a few times in the past, but never stepped foot in as I was worried my kids would not be able to eat the spicy noodles. Turns out the noodles were not too spicy and the kids could enjoy it with us :)

The Famous Cendol

The outlet is pretty small, with limited tables and it is very popular so its common to see lots of people waiting for tables. We both ordered the Original Teochew Cendol (RM4.90) which arrived rather quickly. It is pretty good, creamy with a generous amount of cendol strands and red bean.

The noodles took sometime to arrive, possibly due to the limited kitchen space. We ordered the assam laksa (RM7.90) and Penang curry mee (RM7.90), both which we found quite mild tasting. The assam laksa was pretty good though a bit on the sweet side, however Baby C seemed to enjoy it very much. Penang curry mee is white when served, then you mix in the chilli paste and enjoy. I quite like the rich and creamy broth - this came with quite a nice amount of cockles, prawns, tofu puff and long beans.

I know it's a bit late now that Christmas is over, but here's some photos of the Christmas decor at Paradigm Mall. I saw on a friend's feed that they are reusing the bears but have changed their outfits to CNY ones.

Dessert time - none other than Cielo Dolci's salted caramel gelato ;) Oh-so-good!

Followed by 7 sins of chocolate at Delectable by Su

Such an adorable (gigantic!) bear at the entrance of the mall

Bear-y cute! :D

Price: RM25.60 for cendol + noodles.

Location: Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul, LG-08 Paradigm Mall, No.1 Jalan SS7/26A, Kelana Jaya, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. (near Tesco)
